Transforming Grief Into an Opportunity for Self-Advancement with Shelley Pomerantz

Overcoming Grief

Through her own journey of healing, Shelley Pomerantz uncovers the irony that unconditional love is the key to overcoming the grief, shame, and inconsolable heartache from her chaotic and complex childhood.

Shelley Pomerantz is a registered psychotherapist and national speaker with over 40 years of experience in family, marital and individual therapy. She is the co-founder of Young Lawrence Center counseling and consulting, and author of the book “What Your Mother Never Told You About Love, Sex and Power”.

Shelley Pomerantz grew up in a complex and chaotic family with undiagnosed addiction and mental illness. As a child, she experienced her mother’s dark thunderclouds and emotional outbursts, leading her to seek understanding about the pain and fear she felt. Through reading and her own intuition, she found her way to McGill and eventually to Toronto, where with her partner Michael, they explored family health. When their daughter Rachel had inconsolable moments, they realized the inconsolable grief state started young and was relational. It was then that Shelley realized the walls she had put up to protect herself and the family shame she had felt were preventing her from true emotional connection.

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How can we understand and heal our own “inconsolable” grief states that can arise in relationships?
2. What is the impact of “toxic shame” and “toxic perfectionism” on relationships?
3. How do we recognize and work through the “emotional narratives” that arise in our primary love relationships?
